Understanding your monthly summary
How to read your end-of-month summary in SpendSquirrel and use it to plan a calmer next month.
Last updated: 2026-07-02
At the end of each month, SpendSquirrel gives you a simple summary of what happened. This is where the real value is, not to judge the month, but to learn from it.
What the summary shows
Your monthly summary compares your plan to what actually happened, category by category. For each category you can see:
- What you planned to spend
- What you actually spent
- The difference between the two
Seeing planned and actual side by side tells you the story of your month at a glance, without having to dig through statements.
Reading it without judgment
Some categories will be over, some under. That is completely normal, and neither is a mark against you. A category that went over is simply information, it tells you the plan was a little tight there, or that something unexpected came up. Approach it with curiosity, not blame.
Turning insight into next month
The summary is most useful as a starting point for next month:
- Where you consistently overspend, consider raising the planned amount.
- Where you have room to spare, you might move some towards savings or debt.
- If one category surprised you, look at what drove it.
Celebrate the wins
It is easy to focus only on where things slipped. Take a moment to notice what went well too, sticking to a category, saving something, or simply having a clear picture. Those wins are worth acknowledging, and they are what keep the habit going.
