Setting up your first spending plan

A step-by-step walkthrough of creating your first monthly spending plan in SpendSquirrel.

Welcome. This guide walks you through building your first spending plan. It takes about ten minutes, and you can change anything later.

1. Create your household

Give your plan a name, choose your currency, and decide whether it is just for you or for a household. This takes under a minute.

2. Add your income

Add every source of income, salary, self-employment, benefits, or side income. If your income varies, you can enter an average and adjust it during the month.

3. Add your bills and fixed costs

Record rent or mortgage, utilities, insurance, subscriptions, and any loan repayments. SpendSquirrel shows you exactly how much is left after your bills.

4. Create your spending categories

Divide what is left across the things you spend on, such as groceries, travel, and personal spending. You are in control of the categories, so keep it simple to start.

5. Track during the month

Log spending as you go, or enter it in batches. Your remaining balances update in real time, so you always know where you stand.

That is your first plan complete. At the end of the month, review what matched your plan and what did not, then adjust for next time.
