Getting started

Logging transactions during the month

How to record your spending as the month goes on so your remaining balances always stay up to date.

Last updated: 2026-07-02

A plan comes to life when you track what actually happens. Logging your spending as the month goes on is what turns SpendSquirrel from a forecast into a clear, live picture of your money.

Log spending as you go, or in batches

There is no single right way to do this. Pick whatever you will actually keep up with:

  • As you go. Add a transaction from your phone whenever you spend. Quick and keeps everything current.
  • In batches. Sit down once or twice a week and enter recent spending in one go. Just as effective, and some people find a regular check-in calming.

How to log a transaction

For each transaction, enter the amount and choose the category it belongs to, for example groceries or travel. SpendSquirrel subtracts it from that category and updates your remaining balance in real time, so you always know where you stand.

Seeing your balances update

As you log spending, each category shows how much is left. This is the heart of the tool. Instead of wondering whether you can afford something, you can simply look.

If you overspend a category

It happens, and it is not a failure. When a category runs low, you can either ease off for the rest of the month or move some money from another category that has room. The point is to see it early and respond calmly, rather than find out at the end.

Build a gentle habit

The most useful thing is consistency, not perfection. A minute here and there keeps your plan honest and keeps the end-of-month surprises away.
